JOURNAL CHAPTER ONE

Directions: You need to pick one journal topic for class and one for homework. The timeline you will make for each chapter of the book. You are only starting the timeline with chapter one.

1. Compare life in Indiana from the early 1800s until 1840. Look at the graph on page 8. Tell about he changes in the land and the people.

 

2. Tell two reasons why Abraham Lincoln and his family left Kentucky and moved to Indiana.

3. Make a time line. Begin your time line with the day Lincoln was born. Then, add events in his life as we progress through the story. Use the Timeline Worksheet to write the events in Abe’s life.

4. Tell how Abraham Lincoln’s family influenced him as a young child. What did they help him learn?

1. Tell about the changes in Abe’s life when he was 9-years old. What challenges did Abe’s family have then? Tell what happened to make life better for the Lincoln family and how this person helped them.

2. Imagine you are a friend of Abe Lincoln. The politicians come to town to talk to the people. After they left, Abe starts imitating them. Draw a picture of Abe imitating the politicians. Read p. 12 again to make sure you have the details. Then, show and tell how the people felt about Abe’s stories and imitations.

3. Describe Abe’s life as a teenager. What did he do? How did he get his nickname, "Railsplitter"? What exciting adventure did Abe have with his friend, Allen?

4. Complete the important events of Abe’s life on your timeline
