Welcome to the Primary Teacher's Nook and my first grade class. My name is Beverly (Sarah) Froehlich. I am a National Board certified
teacher in early childhood education. I went to college at Xavier
University (Edgecliff College) in Ohio and completed my B.A. degree in
philosophy and English. In 1989, I received my Masters Degree from Arizona State
University in bilingual/multicultural special education. I was a
bilingual teacher in the Cartwright School District in Phoenix, Arizona
for almost two decades. Although I have taught many grades and special
education on the elementary level, creating enthusiastic historians is my delight and
passion. This web page is created as a labor of love
for teachers who touch the lives of children each day and my school families. Teachers, I hope that
the unit themes and ideas enhance your curriculum and save you planning time.
Parents, I hope you will enjoy seeing our exciting learning experiences
throughout the year.

In June 2004, I relocated to Stafford County Virginia. This
opportunity is one that I wanted to pursue for many years. In the
Fall, 2004, I became part of the Margaret Brent Elementary School staff.
Working with the wonderful leadership and dynamic teachers at this school has
been very exciting. At the end of the 2006 school year, I decided to make
Prince William County Schools my new home. After teaching at Triangle
School (1st and 5th grade social studies) for two years, I received a new
calling where I can share my love of history and the Constitution. In 2008-2009, I
taught 7th grade and
U.S. government/economics/civics. This year, 2009-2010, I am a special
education teacher back in Phoenix.
When I am not teaching, I instruct at a university, mentor and
train teachers, and develop curriculum. Since I love history and reading
you can usually find me visiting a historical place or reading many different
kinds of books. I was selected as a national teacher for social studies/history for the
University of Virginia (Thomas Jefferson-Stratford Hall) and for Williamsburg,
Virginia. Additionally, I was selected for several NEH history summer
institutes and Gilder Lehrman (Woodrow Wilson, WWI). Currently, I am
working on my second graduate degree at Ashland University in U.S. history and
government. I am very involved with historical events and personalities from
the Revolution and Civil War. I had family members from Virginia who
participated in both historical events. During the 2005-06 school year I was
participated as a history fellow on a history grant from the University of Mary
Washington. My favorite books are about Jefferson,
Lee, Dolley Madison and other women from these times. I am currently researching
and reading about Mary Todd Lincoln, Rosie O'Neal,
and Theodore Roosevelt. When I am not reading or creating on this
web page, I enjoy many diverse crafts, sewing, and I can decorate until I
drop! Laura Ingalls Wilder was my
favorite author when I was young ( I still love her books). My
favorite movie has always been "Gone With the Wind".
My
Family
My three daughters are my best work. Stephanie
was a elementary and middle school teacher in Arizona. She was recently appointed as an assistant principal. She received her M.Ed in educational administration
from Northern Arizona University. Jennifer, recently married, is attending
nursing school in
California. Caroline graduated from
the University of Arizona in 2006 and has a wonderful job in the D.C. area. My pets have
me very well
trained. You can read more about Dolley and Ellie Rose, their adventures, my grandson and
granddaughter on this web
site, too. I have one brother who is retired from the Navy. My brother and
his wife also live in Fredericksburg, Virginia. My mother and father live
in Arizona but often visit Virginia.

First grade is the best! First graders are little sponges. Each
year I am amazed at the developmental changes that evolve from the first day of
school to the end of the year. Teaching first grade is a very active and
interactive experience because the kids are so eager to learn and grow.
In, 2007-2008, I taught fifth grade language arts and
social studies. I love to read and I have a passion for history! I
look forward to introducing my students to some wonderful activities and
learning experiences in American history. In 2008-2009 I moved up to the
middle school level. I
taught 7th grade civics and the We the People program. I was so fortunate to
become involved with the Center for Civic Education and the Montpelier program.
During that year, my students competed in formal classroom debates.
Additionally, they competed in Fairfax County in the We the People regional
congressional debates. They had a great experience and were quite proud of
their success. Congratulations to my winning teams!
In June of this year, I had to return to Phoenix for family reasons. I am
still teaching and working as a college supervisor. I really miss my
historical journeys in Virginia but am happy to be with my daughter, parents,
and grandchildren again.
Time
for me to get back to work. Come back and visit the web site throughout
the year. I will be posting pictures, information, and newsletters about
our classroom, learning experiences, or school events.
