ABRAHAM  LINCOLN BOOKS LIST

Literature activities support social studies learning.  Integrating literacy activities and music into social studies/history concepts complements instruction, motivates students, and creates an active learning environment.  History should not be taught as an isolated content area or as simple memorization of facts.  Such instructional practices are contrary to the national standards as well as sound pedagogy.  Plus, this form of instructional delivery is simply boring to kids and they never internalize the beauty of history.  As I plan my social studies units, I incorporate many literacy activities to include read aloud books, picture books, guided reading, poems, songs, drama, music, writer's workshop, art, and primary sources.  The developmental process of concepts, SOLS, etc. I plan by the understanding by design approach. The list of books on this page are a FEW suggestions of the books that I know my students have loved to read.  As new books are published or I find great stories that are accurate, I will add more.  Visit often.. this is a work in progress.

nor can social studies instruction stand alone in the curriculum.
