APRIL CONCEPTS ROOM 35 FIRST GRADE
The kids in Room 35 will be blooming this month. We will be reading many great books and investigating themes as we plant new learning seeds. What a beautiful garden we have in this classroom!
* Measure length using nonstandard units * Estimate, measure and compare lengths using nonstandard units. * Compare lengths to one foot. * Measure and compare lengths using centimeters * Estimate and measure distances around objects * Explore weights using a balance. * Compare the weight of an object to one pound * Compare capacities to cups, pints, quarts. * Compare capacities to liters. * Compare and measure temperatures. * Use concepts in problem solving applications.
* Finding sums for doubles through 18 * Find sums by using doubles and doubles plus one * Use strategies to add 3 numbers * Explore finding sums by making 10. * Find differences using addition doubles fact. * Solve subtraction facts for 15-18 by using related facts. * Find families of facts through 18 * Apply addition and subtraction number sense in word problem applications.
Later this month we will begin exploring space. Students will investigate the solar system in cooperative groups. As a final project, each group will develop a presentation about one aspect of the solar system (space travel, planets, stars, etc). Parents will be invited to listen to our expert scientists and view their projects. We will begin this unit about April 18th. At the end of the month, we will begin our unit on plant communities. More information will be added as our units develop.
April 11 Group 1 will read JUNIE B. JONES HAS A PEEP IN HER POCKET. Group 2 will also read a chapter book. April 18 or 20th - Group 1 will read MRS. JEEPERS IN OUTER SPACE (The Bailey School Kids Series); Group 2 will read MIDNIGHT ON THE MOON (Magic Tree House Series), and Group 3 will also be reading about space.
