The
Civil War

Welcome
to my Civil War section of patriotic studies unit, grades 1 to
5. I hope that you will find all of the time saving
ideas and resources you need in the development of your Civil
War unit. Please check back to this site frequently since
I add new information and ideas. If there is something
special you are looking for, email me and I will make every
effort to either answer your question or direct you to the
proper source. Since the primary strands of social studies
are constant, the content on this page will be applicable to
most grade levels. All you have to do is "tweek"
the concepts and skills to meet the needs of your class or grade
level. I have incorporated many of the lessons and
concepts in my first grade classroom as well as intermediate
grade classrooms. As a Virginia teacher, the links, content, and
ideas will be directly related to our S.O.Ls as well as local
field trips. Other added links include a list of wonderful
literature, music and primary sources that SHOULD be integrated
into this study.
My
passion is history, especially the Civil War. As a young
child, my grandfather would tell me stories of our family
members who fought in the Civil War from Tennessee and
Virginia. My grandfather was a farmer who loved to
talk. So, as he planted seeds in the field, he also
planted wonderful ideas in my mind that continued to bloom as I
matured. History fascinates me but my personal connections
to this period of time in the 1800s is deep. As families
were divided, so were my ancestors since my grandmother's family
name was Burnside while the other members remained in the
Confederacy. I pursue this interest through research, local historical
organizations and events, United Daughters of the Confederacy
activities, reenactments, and more.
Enjoy your visit and come back soon!
