Colonial America Unit

Welcome to the Early American Colonial section of our fifth grade, Virginia history page. This is one of my favorite historical times to teach.  There are unlimited activities and resources that will enable you to plan for active and engaging learning experiences in your classroom.  I will be adding to this section frequently during November, 2007.  If you visit the site weekly, new resources and ideas will be added.  I hope that this page will save you time and be a resource as you plan for this component in the curriculum. The section is divided by each section of SOL USI5.

                       Virginia Standards of Learning  5a

The following are the fifth grade Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLS) for the colonization unit for fifth grade.  The lessons and resources presented will follow each SOL.

USI 5a - Students will demonstrate knowledge of the factors that shaped colonial America by describing the religious and economic factors that led to the colonization of America.

Essential Question:  Why did  the Europeans establish colonies in North America?

Essential Knowledge: Why each colony was established:

  *  Roanoke Island (Lost Colony) was established as an economic venture. The first permanent settlement in North America (1607), Jamestown was an economic venture by the Virginia Company.

   *  Plymouth Colony was settled by separatists who wanted to avoid religious persecution.

   *  Massachusetts Bay Colony was settled by Puritans who wanted to avoid religious persecution.

   *  Pennsylvania was settled by the Quakers, who wanted to have freedom to practice their faith without interference.

   * Georgia was settled by people who had been in debtor's prisons in England.  They hoed to experience a new life in the colony and to experience economic freedom in the new world.

  Essential Skills:

*  Identify and interpret primary and secondary source documents to increase understanding of events and life in U.S. history (USI1a)

*  Sequence events in U.S. history (USI1c)

*  Interpret ideas and events from different historical perspectives.  (USI 1d)

  Scenario Sort

   Where Should I Go?

This activity involves students reading scenarios written on scroll shape art (Microsoft shapes).  I have included a few for you to use.  You can always add to the scenarios.  Additionally, I have my students divide into groups and write new scenarios for other groups to sort.  Click here for the scenarios.

  Primary Sources-

Primary sources are a very powerful visual for students.  I have included a few that can be used for discussions and activities.  As I have done in the exploration unit, I pretend that the "big" or main setting and characters of the picture are the "crime scene".  Students then learn how to zoom in on the details of the pictures to create a story about the who, what, when, where, why, and how.  They will make inferences and discuss the significance of the picture or document.

COLONIAL FOLD BOOK

This is a fold sort book. After students have worked with the reasons why the early colonies were started, they make this fold sort book from construction paper and the clue strips.  Take a piece of construction paper and fold the bottom (length side) about 4 inches.  Then, staple the sides.  Fold the paper to make SIX columns, one for each colony.  Student cut the strips with the clues, sort and put the clues in the right pocket.  Write the headers on each pocket, PLYMOUTH COLONY, GEORGIA COLONY, JAMESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, ROANOKE, PENNSYLVANIA.

                      COLONIAL RESEARCH

For each of the five colonies, the students read selections from books relating to an assigned colony. They work with a partner or in a small group to find out about the motivating factors for leaving England, the mode of transportation, where they established the colony, the first experiences and interactions with Native Americans.  Additionally, they are to find information regarding how the colonists established rules or laws for their group  in the New World.   To view a sample of the interactive notebooks, click on the colony name.  The books that I use in this project are also provided on this page.  To view the book, click on the book cover.  This is a direct link to Amazon com.  The Chester the Crab series is wonderful.  The Jamestown Journey book listed below has many cartoons written in easy to understand language and interesting graphics.  The book My Side of the Story (Jamestown) has two books in one.  The first part is the story from the perspective of a Jamestown settler.  The second part is a different story told from the perspective of the Native Americans.  The MY AMERICA series is interesting and the kids enjoy the diaries.  Some of the historical information is weak.

                             Plymouth Colony

Lost Colony of Roanoke - Primary Source Presentation - This lesson is presented through pictures of Sir Walter Raleigh and the main characters of Queen Elizabeth and James I of England.  Since my school is older, I do not have access to technology on a daily basis for power point presentations. The one included here can be converted to a more  interactive presentation using a Smart Board or Power Point. Click here to view the pages.
