              Literature Response Journal

  Making the Journals:

Journals can be made from a variety of materials.  I use construction paper for the cover and back and lined paper with a space at the top for the journal pages. The students decorate the cover by drawing pictures or gluing dinosaurs cut from an Ellison machine.  Some of the journal writing activities are directed by the teacher; some are free response.  The following are journal topic suggestions, sample pages, and a cover design.  Students write and draw their responses.

                      Suggested Journal Topics

1.  Name five things that Danny and the dinosaur saw on their walk.

2.  Tell what happened when the dinosaur saw the people waiting for the bus (p.23)

3.  Tell how the dinosaur helped the people cross the street.

4.  If you could spend a day with a dinosaur, what would you do?  Tell about the places you would go.

5.  You brought home a baby dinosaur.  Tell what your mother/father said about this new creature.  How would you take care of the baby dinosaur?

6.  The dinosaur wanted to eat the grass.  Why couldn't he eat the grass?  Tell what Danny and the Dinosaur ate instead. (p30-31)

7.  Tell what happened when Danny and the dinosaur went to the zoo.  Why did they have to leave?  What is your favorite zoo animal?  What would you tell Danny and the Dinosaur?

8.  You brought your friends to see your new dinosaur.  What kind of dinosaur did you have?  What did you and your friends do with the dinosaur?

9.  Who was easier to find, the kids or the dinosaur?  Why.

10.  Look at page 56.  Do you think the children could find the dinosaur or were they playing a trick on him?  Do you think the dinosaur really fooled the children?

Format Example for Journal One - Squares

Squares can be used for sequencing and retelling.

In each square draw each thing that Danny and the dinosaur saw on their walk.  In the last square, draw your favorite part.
