Dinosaur Thomp Game:
Make three sets of vocabulary cards. Write the words on index cards (3 x 5). On several other cards write the word, "thomp". Make containers for each set of cards. I use 1/2 gallon milk cartons or coffee cans (1lb. size). I decorate the outside of the container to go with the theme. Mix the vocabulary word cards with the thomp cards. Put one set in each of the three containers. Students take turns drawing the word card from the container and read the card. If they do not know the word, the card goes back into the container. If they know the word, they keep it. IF they draw the "thomp" card, all of their cards that they have earned return to the container.
Vocabulary Memory Game:
Write the words on index cards. Write each word two times. Students match the words playing the Memory Game.
Vocabulary Pocket Chart:
During center or read the room time.. students can work with vocabulary cards for directed activities. The words can be read using a special pointer with a partner. The words can be arranged in alphabetical order. Words can also be arranged by word family or vowel sound, beginning or ending sound, or mystery words (kn, ph, igh, etc).
Vocabulary Cloze:
Write sentences on sentence strips leaving out a vocabulary word in each sentence. Write the missing words on dinosaur shaped cards. Place the sentences in the pocket chart. Students read the sentence and place the correct vocabulary dinosaur card in the missing space. Great activity to promote reading, context clues, and strategies.
