          Corn Cob Prints

Wash the corn cobs.  The cobs must dry for a few days.  Make paint in shallow, disposable pie tins.  Children roll the corn cob in the paint.  Then, they roll or press the corn cot on sheets of construction paper to make the print.

                      The Seasons

This project is an extension activity after reading and working with the book, The Year at Maple Farm, by Alice and Martin Provensen.  There are suggested activities that go beyond this example in the book, The Farm Thematic Unit, by Teacher Created Materials.  To view these books or other books, go to the farm book pages.  There are direct links for each book to Amazon.com.

Materials:  Water color paints, construction paper, crayons, brushes, paper towels, and water in cups. Additional pieces of construction paper (2) for the book cover and back.

Directions:  Have students take four pieces of white construction paper during the project.  They do NOT need all four pieces at the same time.  Then, they write in crayon, at the top of each page, SUMMER, WINTER, SPRING, FALL.  On each page, they will draw with crayon scenes representing each season to include changes in vegetation, animals, etc.  After the crayon scene is completed, they use water color paints to "wash" across the crayon.  MAKE SURE YOU TELL STUDENTS NOT TO COLOR THE ENTIRE PAGE WITH CRAYON.  They need to leave some white spaces for the watercolor wash. After students have completed each season page, bind the pages together into a book using the other 2-pieces of construction paper.  Students can glue writing paper to the last page and write about their book or dictate sentences to an adult/older student.
