Welcome
to our first grade October news! Room 20 has been
busy during the first four weeks of school. Our
classroom family has been learning new procedures,
routines, and all about each other. As we welcome
Fall, we will begin a new learning journey. Your
children will be have many new experiences this
month. We will begin our reading groups after our
testing on Monday, October 2, 2006. Our math
program will pick up the pace a bit as we move to deeper
understanding of number concepts. Real first grade
work is beginning!
Each
month
I will publish our first grade news, pictures, and
upcoming Triangle events on this web page. All of
you received a copy of the web site information during
our the Back To School night in September. Our new
Room 20 pugsters are now published on our first grade
site. If your child's picture is not on the
welcome page, please return the Internet permission
paper. I will publish his/her picture when you have
signed the permission form.
HOMEWORK
- Please check your child's homework folder each
night. They will continue with the red, green, and
yellow behavior calendars this month. REMEMBER,
the number of red and yellow squares changes this
month. No red squares permitted for Fun Friday
participation. You must have ALL GREEN squares for
Fun Friday. Word work homework will be sent home
on MONDAY. The homework MUST be returned by FRIDAY
each week! Reading bags/books are homework each

October
Learning Themes

Here is a preview of some of our learning themes this
month.
Math Investigations -
Book Two Building Number Sense. We will explore
counting, addition, subtraction, graphing, and problem
solving.
Trophies Reading -
Book One. Our reading will include the stories,
Jack and Rick, Todd's Box, and All that Corn.
Students will also be working in reading groups.
They will be bringing home a reading bag each
night. Inside of the bag will be a book to read,
their reading journal, and a reading log. Please
return all materials to school each day with your child.
We will be working on story elements, comprehension,
developing reading strategies, sight words, vocabulary,
and phonetic skills. Reading with your child each
night will support this learning process.
Science -
Sound and Motion. We will investigate how objects
produce sound and that moving objects exhibit different
kinds of motion the first two weeks in October.
Then, we will study seasonal changes and the Fall
growing season.
Social
Studies - We will learn about Christopher Columbus,
timelines, and exploration. We will continue with
our daily geography activities each day.
Writer's Workshop
- This month our writing will become more
sophisticated. We will be writing narratives about
small moments in our lives. Students will learn
how to take an event in their life and stretch the
moment into a story. We will continue to work on
the writing process and publish each Friday. This
month, I will publish our writing on a special
celebration page on this website.

READING KICKOFF!
On
Friday, October 13, 2006, Triangle students learned
about our reading program. We had a big kickoff
assembly on Friday. Each child is required to read
ONE book each night in every first grade classroom. Our
goal is 80 books each week. Our "football
field" is on the hallway bulletin board. The
winning class will be able to go to the Triangle
Superbowl with Mr. Marinoble and Mrs. Carillo.
Your child will bring home a reading log that parents
must sign each day. Reading the books in their
daily book bags does count. So, get our Pugsters
reading, reading, reading.
Please...
frequently return to this web site to read all about
important events at Triangle School and our great
