The Important Thing About First Grade

          

  At the end of each year, I read a book called The Important Book.  We discuss many things in life that are important throughout the year.  However, during the last weeks of school, we listen to this story again and then brainstorm all of the characteristics of first grade that the kids think are important.  I suggest that they think about their first weeks in our classroom and how they felt about being a new first grader.  Now that they are the "experts" at being first graders, I ask them to contribute their ideas as we create a list of our ideas to share with the rising kindergarteners.  My children take this assignment very seriously as they ponder the best advice for the new crop of first grade students in Room 35.  Reading their responses each year is rewarding.

                                            

            THE IMPORTANT THING ABOUT FIRST GRADE, 2005-2006

The important thing about first grade is being responsible.  Responsible is being kind and trustworthy.  Also following directions.  But the most important thing about first grade is being responsible.

 The important things about first grade are being responsible, caring, kind, and respectful.  Being responsible means not leaving materials out.  Being caring means that you have feelings for someone.  Being kind means that you're nice.  Respect is the golden word.  You need the golden rule for first grade:  Treat people the way you want to be treated.  But the most important thing about first grade is learning.

The important thing about first grade are the teachers.  The teachers help us learn stuff that we do not know.  Learning new things and thinking helps you in math.  You can do the Pledge which is a promise to do the right thing.  Miss Froehlich teaches us songs that helps us learn.  But the important thing about first grade is the pledge.
