March Newsletter Room 35

 Dear Parents,

This month the super kids in Room 35 will be learning about maps, Japan, and a bit of St. Patrick.  It is possible that some little Irish creatures may visit around the middle of the month.  Last year, they had such a party that the kids had to find their lost shoes.   More news about our St. Patrick's Day fun in a few weeks. I wonder if the leprechauns will have some fun in our classroom while we are not looking.

In math we will continue our investigations learning about addition, subtraction, problem solving and number sense.  We will continue to apply these skills using money. To help your child with the concepts of money, let them count mixed coins (pennies, nickels, dimes) at home.  Some children need additional support in counting by tens, fives, and counting on (ten, twenty, twenty-five, twenty-six, etc with mixed coin amounts).

The Pugsters have completed their projects about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War.  Their writing and activities are displayed in the hallway outside of Room 35.  I have shared their work with many teachers from other schools and grade levels. They are so amazed at the historical understandings and interest level of these wonderful Pugsters.  They really have enjoyed my Civil War stories and books.  Stop by and look at our work.   I know you will be dazzled!

Here are some important events to record on your calendar for this month.

  *  March 3 - Information about yearbooks is sent home.  If you would like to purchase a yearbook for your child, complete the form and return the form with your payment to school.  I will submit the forms and money to the yearbook committee.

  Dr. Seuss Day

                March 2, 2006

Thank you to all of the parents who have contributed needed items such as printer ink and card stock paper for our classroom.  I am able to create more centers and activities for the kids with these supplies. Additionally, thank you families for your love, support and help during the tragedy we experienced in our classroom in February.  You are all wonderful.

Think green.. snow days may be over.  Needless to say, I am still on a learning curve with snow gear, driving, and all of the tools one needs to combat snow.

Next week students will be reading books about St. Patrick's Day. One group will read the book, Leprechauns Don't Play Basketball, A Bailey Street book.

Next week, students will begin their second project.  This project will be an individual effort.  They submitted their top two topic choices during the first week of March.  The project will be completed at school and at home.  They will have a "requirement" checklist to follow.  For the project they will read, web, and write about their topic.  For their final presentation, they will teach the class about their topic through by singing, drama, constructing a model, etc.  They have the option to select the final presentation format.  Information will be sent home later with details.

                                                  NEW BABY NEWS!

On March 26th, my daughter in Phoenix called to tell me wonderful news!  I have a new pug!  Her name is Allie, and will be called "Allie Scarlet".  She is five years old and loves to be cuddled and loved.  My daughter and I are involved with pug rescue groups.  Allie is a pug rescue dog. Her owner took very good care of her but work took her away from home too often.  Puggies don't like that very much.  So, Miss Dolley will have a sister.  I will be picking up the new baby this summer when I visit my daughters in Phoenix.  Dolley and I are so excited.   Here is a picture of Miss Allie Scarlet.

More news will be added as information becomes available.  I will send home newsletters and publish information on this web site page.

Spring recess will be in April.
