Patriotic Songs and Poems

There are many songs and poems about patriotism, Washington, Lincoln, and President's Day. To keep my songs and poems organized each year, I use the large, spiral, flip chart paper.  I prefer the lined paper to the blank sheets.  On the outside of each flip chart, I write the topic or theme.  The flip charts are easily stored and seldom rip or get lost this way.  As you find new songs and poems, you can add to the chart each year.

         George Washington

       Tune:  Oh, Christmas Tree

  George Washington

       Tune:  Yankee Doodle

 George Washington, George Washington,

He was the first president,

George Washington, George Washington,

He was the first president.

He helped the colonies be free.

He helped get rid of the mean old king.

George Washington, George Washington,

The Father of our country.

Washington was a great man,

The father of our country,

He led in war, he led in peace,

The father of our country.

Many stories, they are told,

Many tales about

Of this great man who led our land

The father of our country.

WHO CHOPPED DOWN THE CHERRY TREE

Tune:  Do you Know the Muffin Man

Do you know who chopped down the tree,

Chopped down the tree, chopped down the tree

Do you know who chopped down the tree

Dad asked George one day.

Yes, I know who chopped down the tree,

chopped down the tree, chopped down the tree

Yes I know who chopped down the tree,

Honest George did say.

It was I who chopped down the tree

Chopped down the tree, chopped down the tree

It was I who chopped down the tree

I'm sorry but it's true.

Thank you George, you told the truth

You told the truth, you told the truth.,

Thank you George, you told the truth

I am proud of you.

          A Wish for February

    George Washington

By:  Winifred C. Marshall

 The Father of his Country

Was once a lad like me.

He played and wrestled on the green

And swung from leafy tree.

But when his country called him,

He put aside his play.

I hope that I, like Washington,

May serve my land some day!

I wonder if George Washington

Was very fond of books.

And if he liked to hung and fish

And wade in little brooks.

I wonder if his pocket bulged,

Like mine with precious things.

With marbles, cookies, tops and balls,

And nails, and glass and strings.

I wonder if he whistled tunes

While mending broken toys.

My father says George Washington

Was much like other boys.

George Washington

 By:  Winifred Marshall

George Washington,

You're number one!

George Washington,

You're number one to me.

Leader of the army,

An able general, George,

Strongly and bravely,

You led at Valley Forge!

Father of our country,

Our first president.

Proudly and wisely,

You led the government!

We celebrate your birthday,

our capital has your name.

Your picture's on a dollar bill,

So all will know your fame!

You never told a lie, George,

You were brave and smart.

First in honor, first in peace,

First in our heart!

The flags fly, the bands play,

Give him the honor due

To one who served his country well,

A leader brave and true

First in defense and first in peace;

In our hearts, as of yore

He holds first place, George Washington,

Our hero, evermore.

How Washington Dressed

By:  Gertrude M. Robinson

When Washington was president,

He wore the strangest clothes;

His shoes had silver buckles on-

Now why do you suppose?

His suit was made of velvet cloth,

With buckles at the knee.

He wore lace ruffles on his coat,

When he went out to tea.

His hair was tied with ribbons, too.

And braided like a girl's.

How could he be a president,

And wear his hair in curls?

My favorite CDs for this patriotic theme are from the Wee Sing series.  Hap Palmer is also an excellent resource to collect.  The marches are always a hit especially on cold, rainy days.  Get them moving!

Honest Abe

Tune:  Yankee Doodle

I love the name of Abraham,

We see him on our money,

And also on our penny.

Honest Abe is what he's called,

Honest, kind and true.

He was jour 16th President

He loved both me and you, sir.

George Washington was a wee lad (had by knee)

Who would not tell a lie (shake head and wag finger)

He told his dad, "I chopped that tree" (ax over shoulder)

He would not tell a lie.

He told his dad, "I chopped that tree

To make a cherry pie."

Abe Lincoln was a wee lad (hand by knee)

Who worked so very hard (wipe brow)

To get some books so he could read (hands together, open a book)

He walk so very far.( pump arms 3 times)

Oh it's true.  Yes, it's true (RH palm up, LH palm up)

He worked so very hard.

To get some books so he could read,

He walked so very far.
