Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLS)

                              First Grade

                                            

          SOL 1.11 - Traits of Good Citizenship - Rules and Responsibilities

             Students will:

                *  Understand the United States has patriotic symbols.

                *  Identify patriotic symbols and traditions that honor people of the United States

                *  Know the following terms:

                       1.  Tradition - a custom or belief that happens over a period of time.

                       2.  Patriotic - showing respect and love of country

                       3.  American Flag - a flag representing the United States.

                 *  Identify the following patriotic symbols of the United States.

                       1.  American flag

                       2.  Bald eagle

                       3.  Washington monument

                       4.  Statue of Liberty

       SOL 1.11b  Students will know that citizens say the Pledge of Allegiance to demonstrate respect for the American flag and the United States.

                 *  Identify and explain symbols

                 *  Classify and interpret information.

 

       SOL 1.2 Contributions of American Leaders

        Students will understand that important deeds were accomplished by people who became American leaders.

          *  Know that a contribution is the act of giving or doing something.

          *  Describe the contributions of the following American leaders:

                 1.  George Washington

                 2.  Benjamin Franklin

                 3.  Abraham Lincoln

                 4.  George Washington Carver.

           *  Understand that major holidays are celebrated to remember important leaders and events of the past.

           *  Define a holiday as a day on which something or someone is honored and remembered.

     

Essential Questions:  SOL 1.2

     What contributions do we remember that were made by George Washington and Abraham Lincoln?

Essential Understandings: SOL 1.2

         Important deeds were accomplished by people who became American leaders.

Essential Knowledge- 1.2 Students will know:

       *  George Washington was born in Virginia, he was a farmer, he became a brave leader of soldiers, He was the first President of the United States.  He is known as the Father of our Country.

       *  Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin.  He taught himself how to read.  He became a United States President.  He was known as "Honest Abe."

        SOL 1.3 - President's Day: This is a day to remember all United States Presidents including George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

             Essential Questions:  1.3

         *  Why do People celebrate holidays?

         *  Who are the people most associated with these holidays?

             Essential Understandings 1.3

          *  Major holidays are celebrated to remember certain important leaders and events of the past.

            Essential Knowledge 1.3- students will know:

             *  Presidents day is a day to remember all United States Presidents, especially George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

             *  It is observed in February
