Welcome to our first grade pioneer scrapbook. The Room 35
pugsters have been learning about pioneers and Laura Ingalls
Wilder. We had a few broken wagon wheels and
were stuck in the mud due to snow days. However, we
finally made our journey as homesteaders and had a celebration
day. Thanks to all of the parent volunteers who helped the
children make pioneer crafts, play games, shadow portraits, and
sewing centers. Mrs. Corbitt, our paraprofessional, traced
shadow portraits of each pioneer student while Mrs. Babbie and
Mrs. Posillico cut out the pictures for our special mounting and
framing. Mr. Malinowski helped the children learn the
running sewing stitch and pioneer games. The children
recreated Ma Ingall's button lantern starters using calico,
buttons, and ribbon with Mrs. Wyatt and Mrs. Worsfold.
Mrs. Espeland and Mrs. Malinowski helped the children make pine
cones donated by Mrs. Schmitz. The children built log
cabins like Pa Ingalls with the help of Mrs. Hooks. We had
a special appearance by a Laura Ingalls interpreter (yes,
it was Miss Froehlich who often assumes the persona of
historical figures). The children performed pioneer
songs, many learned by Laura Ingalls as she listened to her Pa
play his fiddle (Sweet Betsy from Pike, Old Dan Tucker,
etc). The children also wrote pioneer journals from the
view point of Laura Ingalls as they read different Christmas
stories written by the author. In this scrapbook we have
included out pioneer quilts and writing experiences.
You will read about life as a pioneer child, traveling in a
Conestoga wagon, and why pioneers moved West. Our journey
was exciting as we learned about the adventures, hardships, and
culture of American frontier life.
Come to America
We'll show you no harm.
Our Uncle Sam's rich enough
To give you a farm.

Many
students applied our scientific investigation of wheels and
axles by making a Conestoga wagon. Here are a few of their
